On Location: Malawi

In July of 2011, I had the opportunity to go to Malawi. I was headed there to do some volunteer work. Before leaving, I was asked to think of an activity I could bring that would be something unique for the high school students I would be working alongside. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to take cameras and printers so that these kids, all on scholarships to attend school because high school isn't accessible for people to attend, could have pictures of themselves and some friends.

Before I left, I worked at getting digital cameras donated; I ended up with 10, which stayed with the organization and other volunteers upon my departure. I also ended up with five Polaroid PoGo printers, also donated, that would print photographs sans ink cartridges, which was a huge deal and worth it. While there, I let the 180 high school students take pictures of whatever they wanted; for most, it was their first time using a camera, let alone getting a print of their photographs. Each student ended up with five of their pictures printed.
