ADMIT ONE | EDINBURGH

Towards the end of my time living and studying in Edinburgh, Scotland, I started to reflect on my time in there. Only when I stopped and looked back did I begin to fully realize what I was admitted to experience, to see, to discover and what friendships I was able to make as a result just from my time there. To me when you are admitted to a place, be that to a country, a school/university, or even a friends house you are lucky in that you’ve been allowed to see and experience something that not everyone is admitted to witness or encounter.

This is a video that for that period and for those moments spent in a country I was lucky enough to call home even for the short time I was there.

Video Transcript

We are all admitted places
Especially to the places that we call home,
even if they are our home even just for a second.
We all take journeys in life,
as we are looking for the scraps of our, own personal frontier
those moments when while you’re surround by the normal chaos of a day you find yourself enjoying the brief, fleeting feeling of something that no one else noticed.

Yet, while in those cities that millions of people call home
and many more have traveled through
you find your own pocket of that concrete jungle.
Those squirreled away places
that in some way are truly just your own
and a scrap of your own frontier.

However, some journeys, the really good one, don’t have offical endings they just lead to new beginnings.
And those journeys make for innumerable and memorable adventures. Adventures that involve friends both new and old,
some ideas, some plans and
definitely some hairbrained schemes.

Yet, they also involve pain and tears.
These are not tears of sadness or even tears of fear.
These are tears without name.
They are made up of so many emotions,
and hopes and dreams, and conflicts,
that each cancels the other out
until only salt and gravity remain.
Filling those moments and
moving through your expressions.

Our own frontiers are limited to what which we think they can be.
For sometimes castles in the sky really do exist,
as do haunted graveyards, and a city below your feet.
We just have to be willing to look for them and
seek them out if we don’t see them at first sight.
For life is just a series of events,
a series of frontiers,
that sometimes even happen to you.

We are admitted to these places,
to these adventures,
and with that admittance comes another scrape
to build your own frontier,
to see what you can create,
what you can inspire and
what you can cultivate from every scrap you get.
For there are plenty of frontiers out there,
it’s just will we try to be admitted to them
and admit others along the way?

So this where I tell you what I know,
this is where I tell you it will be okay,
this is where I talk to strangers who aren’t really a stranger.
This is where I keep my peace,
my hope,
my love,
and my happiness.
This is where the wind blows the barley.
This is the mulberry bush.
And we will all go around and around.
